History

Early History

Tyrol Confederacy

The Tyrol Confederacy was an alliance among the valley communities of the Inn Valley. The agreement linked the communities in trade and military alliances against larger nations in both northern and southern Europe. The Confederacy began with the pact of Zurghem in which the cantons of Chloe', Idelhem and Zurghem agreed to maintain and watch over the Brenner Pass which connected Italy with northern Europe. As a result, the three cantons soon overflowed with wealth and power, and in 1344 signed the Treaty of Chloe' which created the Tyrol Confederacy.

By 1353 the three original cantons had joined with the cantons of Invertam and Bourgious and now controlled not only all trade from the Brenner Pass, but had also gained control of trade in the Inn valley. The expansion led to increased power and wealth for the federation. By 1501 the Tyrol Confederation controlled all of the Inn Valley from the Swiss cantons in the west, to the Austrian Hapsburg empire in the east. The federation also gained important ground in battles against the Milan and Venice Armies of northern Italy, extending their grasp on Brenner Pass deep into the two nations territory. The military was also able to hold off Swiss and Austrian armies in the two nations quest for expansion, leading to the ultimate defeat of Switzerland by Tyrol in the battle of Chur-Mange.

The Tyrol Confederacy had acquired a reputation of invincibility during these earlier wars, but it was setback in early 1554 when the city of Comens fell to the Austrian Armies of the east. Tyrol had to draw troops out of the heated Italian regions into the war against Austria causing advance on the Austrian front and retreat on the Italian. In 1576 Tyrol and the Italian nations founded the Treaty of Venice which ended warfare against the two nations and divided Brenner Pass between the kingdoms. Because of this the Italian states entered warfare as they grasped to control that area of Brenner Pass that had been given to them, causing Tyrol to become the dominate force in central Europe. The success of the Stourtmouch Reformation in some cantons led to inter-cantonal wars in 1578 and 1581. This caused great strife between the Catholic Aristocrats and the peasant Protestants, leading to Tyrol's slowing growth.

The Kingdom of Tyrol is a central European nation that boasts a high-standard of living and one of the strongest central European markets. Mainly involved in the banking process of the World economy, Chloe' is noted as one of the major financial centers of Europe. With over 1 trillion U.S. dollars worth of transactions flowing through the city every day, the city is also home to one of the largest and most used stock-exchanges in the world, hosting companies such as Exxon, Chloe' Mutual, and AXA.

The nation also boasts one of the busiest Winter tourist season's in Europe, with over 45 ski resorts in and around the Inn Valley. The nation also holds 3 Diamond AA 5 star hotels, and is host to many of eastern and western Europe's elite in the winter season break. All three of Tyrol's main metropolitan centers are also located in the valley, with the capitol Chloe' being located in the center, Bregenz on the western edge and Mountbauer on the eastern edge of the nation. With over 15 million visitors passing through these cities between October and May, the nation is host to many celebrations, festivals and holidays focused on the prosperity of winter and spring.

Geography

Winter in Tyrol can be both majestic and deadly, with temperature's hovering in the -1 to -5 Celsius range.
Winter in Tyrol can be both majestic and deadly, with temperature's hovering in the -1 to -5 Celsius range.
At only about 32km to 60 km wide, the tiny landlocked nation of Tyrol is one of the highest and most mountainous nations in the World. Tyrol boasts three different mountain ranges running through the nation in a East to West direction, the Northern Calcareous Alps, Central Alps, and Southern Calcareous Alps. The nation is intersected by the Inn Valley running from in an East-West direction, in which almost 80% of the nations population is situated. The high mountainous Alps in the west of Tyrol flatten somewhat into low lands and plains in the east of the country, before sliding upwards towards the border of Tyrol and Austria. Both East and West borders of Tyrol have mountains that climb over 10,000 ft. No part of the nation is lower than 500 meters (1,640 ft.), and very few parts (mainly in the Inn Valley) are situated below 1,000 meters.

The Central Alps, which consist largely of a granite base, are the largest and highest ranges in Tyrol. The Northern Calcareous Alps are the smallest range in the nation, the highest peaks reaching barely over 2,000 meters, they quickly lower to flatter lands near the border of Germany. The Southern Calcareous Alps are the second largest range, their peaks growing to heights that match the Central Alps, but they do not claim much land in Tyrol. The range is mainly situated on the Italy-Tyrol border, before winding into the Austrian-Italian-Tyrol border. Although the nation does not sit close to the arctic circle, it is considered to have a climate of the same nature. Noted as a pre-tundra nation, Tyrol temperature rarely rises above 75 degree's Fahrenheit or 23.8 Celsius.

Tyrol is bordered by five nations, Austria, Germany, Italy, Lichtenstein and Switzerland. Because of the nations physical geography, the borders to Italy and Germany are severely limited, with only few ways for transportation to make it across the border. Thanks to the Inn-Valley travel between Austria, Lichtenstein, and Switzerland is more relaxed, with the A-L-1 crossing into all three nations borders.

Population wise the Inn Valley is home to about 85% of the people who live in Tyrol. All three major cities (Chloe', Bregenz, Mountbauer) are located in the Inn Valley or the base of the valley on the Bedogdeersee. The western portion of the nation is also more densely populated, with the border of Switzerland being the heaviest populated area in the nation.

Government

The Kingdom of Tyrol is a Parliamentary Monarchy, with Parliament holding 80% of the government power, and the King holding 20%. It is one of the last major nations in the world to still have a Royal Family hold some sort of power in government. Parliament is situated into 183 seats, and 7 different parties, ranging from the King's Party to the Communist and Green Parties. Both Parliament and the Kings Court are located in the capitol city of Chloe', as well as almost every major government agency. The city of Bregenz is also categorized as a governmental center, hosting both Tyrol's military defense headquarters, and the SCJU offices for Tyrol. The city has in recent years striven to become a center for diplomacy, much as the city of Chloe' has worked to become the economical center for Tyrol.

The King's Court is located in the small village of Neursbard, about 2 km from Chloe'. It has been the main seat for the Royal family for over 400 years, including the occupation of Austria-Hungry, and the German Reich. In 1944 the Nazi government in a last ditch effort tried to re-start the movement in the King's Court, but it was to late to save the faltering government from advancing Russian forces.

Parliament is located in the center of Chloe', taking up the Stag-Dortmund building. Parliament was first opened in December 1945, and has until 2008 been running the government. Parliament was disbanded by King James in late August as Tyrol's grip on SCJU diplomacy began to fail, and the nations economy took a down-turn. Voting will begin in late December, and Parliament should be reinstated in February.

Head of State

The Kingdom of Tyrol is run by two heads of state, the Speaker who is in charge of Parliament, and King James Auldof.

  • Speaker - The Speaker is the main parties leader in Parliament, and is also the image of the nation. Acting in many ways as a Prime Minister would, his job includes not only Parliament, but many of Tyrol's everyday problems. He is in charge of Defense, Economy, and the Legislator.
  • King James - The Kings main job is in Parliament, as a permanent member of Parliament he has the right to vote and veto any law (he holds 20% of the Power) and has the final say on any law. If vetoed Parliament can re-veto and if passed with 65% of the vote can override the King's say. The King does not hold any power in the actual happenings of Tyrol, but does have the power to advise the Speaker. He has held the right since August though as Parliament was disbanded and has not yet been voted in.

Federal Government

The Parliament of Tyrol is the main legislative power in the nation holding 80% of the power, and consists of two bodies

  • The Federal Council
  • The Kings Council

The Federal Council

The Federal Council is composed of 183 members elected through the Ostrrich leaders of the two states in Tyrol. This happens every five years, or earlier if the National Council prematurely moves for its own dissolution, or if the King disbands it. The National Council is the dominant house in the Tyrol Parliament, and consequently the terms Parliament and National Council are commonly used synonymously. The Council has been in use since 1945 and drafted up the Tyrol Treaty, which set in place many of the nations laws and its independence in 1945.

The Kings Council

Broken up into 16 different councils, the Kings Council holds no power in the Parliament, but reports directly to the King. The different councils are broken up into the main sectors of the government such as the Council of Transportation or the Council of Trade. The group meets under the Kings order, but must be called into use every 3 months under the Council law of 1654. The Kings council is also the older of the two bodies, it held 50% power until the Austrian takeover, and was disbanded until 1947 when the King was placed back in the government.

Royal Family

The Royal Family of Tyrol is one of the longest ruling bodies in the world, with some sort of power in the nation for over 500 years (absent in the rule of Austria-Hungry and Nazi Germany). Coming to power in 1501 the Auldof's were the most prominent family in Chloe', the unofficial capitol of the Tyrol Confederacy. The family was in control of the nation until the Austrian-Tyrol war and the Napoleonic era when Tyrol lost the Battle of Idelhem to the French Army, ceding its territory to Austria. The Royal family was forced to exile itself to Liechtenstein and for 50 years (1845-1896) lived in Geneva with the nations Royal Family. Today the monarchy holds 20% of the governments power and the ability to veto, but since August has held almost 100% of the power when Parliament was disbanded.

Conditions

  • Imperial Atlantean Empire - Although relations with this nation have been good in the past, the closeness of the two nations has begun to falter. With the opening of a new bank HQ in rival Paranor Island, and the relationship issue with Russia, Tyrol has set the nations relations to simply Good. "We were hoping that Atlantis would recognize our relation with Russia was not only for our nations benefit, but to hold the choice of Diplomacy over Sanctions and War. Obviously Atlantis is more concerned with its image than with our relationship" (Former Speaker of the Parliament Sir Munich).
  • Kitami- Relations faltered this year with the asian nation as Tyrol's economy began to falter, but there are high hopes that the two nations will be working together in the future.
  • New Burgundy - With relations tense after the Viceroyalty of Dominea scandal, the relations between Tyrol and New Burgundy crashed when the Arms deal fell through. At this time the nations have been working to better terms, but no real progress has been made.
  • Pacific Columbia - Relations with the small American nation have begun to pick up as the Tyrol and PC begin to start diplomatic talks. Pacific Columbia placed sanctions on Tyrol this summer, and in return where threatened with sanctions of their own before Tyrol backed down. Flights between the two nations have begun again and travel restrictions have been replaced, but Tyrol has yet to open its Embassy back up, or have any diplomats travel to the nation. All talks have been made in New York, New York, United States of America.
