The Helios System

Contents

Helios System

The Helios (pronounced Hee-Lee-oss) system, is the home system of The Twelve Colonies of Kobol, it is a binary star system and contains 13 planets and several moons. Helios Minor (Helios B), orbits Helios Major but, also has 6 natural (and now habitable) satellites. The word "Helios" is derived from the Greek god of the sunL "Helios", whom in keeping with Colonial and Greek mythology is the son of the Titan Hyperion and Theia. The Hyperion Nebula, is derived from that mythology meaning the Nebula of Light.

The Helios Major Band describes the invisible band of orbits that surround the star; Helios Major. It contains the planets: Leonis, Aerelon, Caprica, Gemenon, Aquaria and Libris in that order. its diameter is approximately 105 Million km from the orbit of Leonis, to the orbit of Libris (at longest points)

The star Helios Major is a main sequence G0 dwarf star with a surface temperature of approximately 6,000 degrees kelvin, a total luminosity of 1.26, a mass of 1.05 and a radius of 1.19. It is approximately 1 quarter brighter than its companion Helios Minor and completes one rotation in 11 days. Solar activity cycle is measured at 16.5 Years. with a secondary cycle of approximately 9.2 years.

Leonis

The planet Leonis is the most innermost planet on the Helios Major Band and is located some 95 million km from Helios Major. It takes 98 days to orbit the star and is classified as a Class K planet. It is generally a hot planet, with an average yearly temperature of 20C in the southern and Northern hemispheres and 25C at the equator. The maximum recorded temperature on Leonis was 65C in the summer of AGE 221. Most Leonis settlements are located in or around the poles, with widespread vegetation, flora and fauna at each. The equatorial regions tend to be entirely desert or tundra with little signs of life.

Much of the planet's surface is covered in water, which reflects back most of the light that would otherwise be trapped in the atmosphere, invariably heating the planet and rendering Leonis inhospitable. Leonis has a Colonial population of approximately 350 Million, most cities are located in the more temperate southern hemisphere, including the capital; Lennox.

Aerelon

The planet Aerelon is the second most innermost planet on the Helios Major Band and is located some 120 million km from Helios Major. It takes 234 days to orbit the star and is classified as a Class O planet. It is generally a warm planet, with an average yearly temperature of 18C in the southern and Northern hemispheres and 21C at the equator. The maximum recorded temperature on Aerelon was 59C in the summer of AGE 129. Aerelon settlements occupy all regions of the planet, particularly around coastal and flat areas where agriculture has made inroads into the almost planet wide rainforest. Aerelon has only one large body of water named the Opal Ocean, other bodies of water take the form of thousands of lakes linked by deltas and winding rivers. Aerelon has one moon named Troy

Much of the planet's surface is covered in dense rainforest or woodland, which unexpectedly spread after terraforming was completed, taking advantage of the increased sunlight (proximity to the star) and the elevated carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Aerelon has a Colonial population of approximately 1.5 Billion, most cities are located in the more temperate southern hemisphere, including the capital; Aeris has approximately 2.1 million inhabitants, which makes it one of the least populous capitals.
Aerelon is widely considered the "bread basket" of the Colonies. It is primarily an agricultural world, supplying the colonies with much produce. Despite this, Aerelon remains one of the poorer colonies out of the twelve. Aerelon natives tend to speak with a raspy dialect and tend to live in the many rural settlements on the planet. Aerelon's moon Troy is widely infamous due to the Troy Disaster, that claimed some 2000 lives.

The planet Caprica is the third most innermost planet on the Helios Major Band and is located some 130 million km from Helios Major. It takes 353 days to orbit the star and is classified as a Class M planet. It is generally a temperate planet, with an average yearly temperature of 8C in the southern and Northern hemispheres and 18C at the equator. The maximum recorded temperature on Caprica was 57C in the summer of AGE 24. Caprican settlements occupy all regions of the planet, particularly around coastal and flat areas where sprawling cities have intermingled, Caprica is considered the centre of politics, art, culture, learning and science of all the twelve colonies. Caprica has only 3 large oceans and 4 primary continents. Caprica has two moons named Aphrodite and Artemis.

The Helios Minor Band describes the invisible band of orbits that surround the star; Helios Minor. It contains the planets: Picon, Canceron, Virgon, Sagittaron, Tauron and Scorpia, in that order. its diameter is approximately 100 Million km from the orbit of Picon, to the orbit of Scorpia (at longest points). The band contains the highest proportion of habitable dwarf planets in The Twelve Colonies.

The star Helios Minor is a main sequence G5 dwarf star with a surface temperature of approximately 5,610 degrees kelvin, a total luminosity of 0.79, a mass of 0.93 and a radius of 0.93. It is approximately 1 quarter dimmer than its companion Helios Major and completes one rotation in 32 days. Solar activity cycle is measured at 25.5 Years. with a secondary cycle of approximately 12.8 years.

Sagittarons are very much the outcasts of Colonial society, for centuries they were often persecuted due to their different belief system and their opposition to modern medicine and technological development. They deem such activities as an affront to their gods (their interpretation of the ancient scripts) and serves nothing but to distance colonials away from religion. The Gemenese were at war with Sagittarons for decades, until other Colonies became involved leading to the Colonial First Interstellar War.

Tauron

Out of all the Colonies, Tauron is by far the most rebellious of all. Often staunchly opposing legislature that even remotely hints at unifying the Colonies any closer than they are, they are often the voice of the "devils advocate", frequently tabling alternate or thought-provoking questions. Taurons tend to be libertarian and their government tends to reflect this, which is an unusual instance when compared to governments of the other colonies. It is well documented that Taurons tend to be independent-bordering on arrogant in terms of free-will and agenda, Tauron traders and mining vessels are frequently monitored by the Colonial fleet for breaches of trade, environmental and mining statutes.

Zodia Asteroid Field

The Zodia Asteroid Field, derived from 'The Zodiac is a non continuous and sparse asteroid field exists in a neighbouring orbit from Scorpia, orbiting Helios Minor and Major. This field is named the Zodia Asteroid Field or less commonly as the Zodia Asteroid Belt. This field or belt contains several million, if not billion asteroids that orbits the solar system in a large elipse roughly in the same shape as that of Ragnar. There are several gaps in the field, spanning several thousand feet or several million km. The field is a popular location for the Colonial Military for use as a viper training location, as well as contraband smuggling for pirates and illegal activities.

Ragnar

  • For more information about the gas giant, read Ragnar
The Planet Ragnar from high-orbit.

Ragnar is a gas giant planet, and the location of the Ragnar Anchorage munitions station located in the outer reaches of the Twelve Colonies. The atmosphere of the planet, in keeping with some gas giants, is wracked by violent storms. Ragnar Anchorage station appears to be located in an area of relative calm within the very tenuous upper atmosphere.

The storms themselves create a high level of electromagnetic interference in the upper atmosphere of the planet, which interferes with a range of systems, including a ship's ability to plot FTL jumps. While this effectively hides Ragnar Anchorage from enemy scans, it also means that a ship must cross the "EM threshold" above the main bulk of the atmosphere before attempting a jump.

The Hyperion Nebula is a reflection class gas cloud celestial object measuring some 2 light years across, that is illuminated by Helios Major and minor. The nebula dominates the night skies from all colonial worlds, particularily in the Northern Hemispheres for Helios Major worlds, and the Southern Hemisphere for Helios Minor Worlds.
