George II, or Georges II (12 June 1941- ), full name Georges Charles Paul Lazare Fernand Albert de la Vallon de la Saxe-Coburg-Gotha de Bruxelles; is the current king of New Burgundy. Born the son Charles, Count of Flanders, and Queen Marie, he was never intended to inherit the throne and was in fact “more of a Belgian than a New Burgundian”.

Early life

Born and raised in Belgium, he grew accustomed to the functioning and intrigues of the Belgian court. He was born in the middle of the German occupation, and personally met Adolf Hitler when he was nearly three, and mentions of it that, “I certainly have not any memories of the event, but I have heard so much that it is almost as if I remember it.” He continued to live in Belgium, holding the title Prince, and studying at the University of Cambridge in the UK. He got along well with King Albert, and was granted the title Count of Nemours. In 1966, however, King Alexander II died without an heir, and Princess Marie was the first in succession, making her queen. Prince George now found himself the heir to the New Burgundian throne.

Heir presumptive

His father was quite reluctant to make the move to Saint Laurent, but later became accustomed to culture. Prince George, now Dauphin Royal, wrote “the people here have a much stronger sense of tradition than in Belgium, not moral conservatism, but tradition and culture.” In 1974, at the age of thirty-one, he married Louise de la Pertan, daughter of Herve, Count of Pertan, who was two years his junior. In 1980 their first son, Alexandre, was born. Crown Prince George played an important role in routing the 1979 attempted coup d’etat by Prime Minister XXX. Prince George ordered the Royal Guard to “Arise, for the Nation is in danger,” at the Royal City Palace, an order which had not been said for over fifty years (when the Royal Guard was called into action during World War One), ordering the Royal Guard to stage a counterattack. Prince George was awarded the Grand Collar of Order of Saint Lawrence (which is usually only held by the reigning monarch).

Reign

He ascended to the throne in 1982, and has his coronation the next year, which had not been held since the coronation of Alexander II in 1946 (three years after his ascension), that of which was a truncated affair due to the aftermath of the Second World War. The coronation was a lavish affair, also designed to coincide with the return of a democratic government, and the new government felt the need to show the world that the monarchy was a strong and unmovable institution, rather than the shaky establishment it had appeared to be in 1979. Thusly George II ascended the throne with confidence, and increased royal power. His reign has been spent re-cementing the crown’s monolithic and permanent status in New Burgundian life, which has mostly been successful, helped by economic growth since the 1980’s until the present. He has, however, faced criticism as being a “foreign monarch” due to his Belgian background; he has retaliated by saying his loyalties lie with “New Burgundy and New Burgundy alone."

Illness

King George II was diagnosed with stomach cancer in July 2009. King George announced his intention to the retire to the Royal Estate of Pertân, and convoked the conseil du roi to appoint a regent. His son Prince Alexandre was appointed regent.
