Introduction

History

1600's-1800's

Pacific Columbia was founded as New Orange in 1690 as a colony of The Netherlands. The first settlement was near where New Amsterdam is today. The Kingdom of the Netherlands claimed all of the 3 islands in present day Pacific Columbia and placed settlements on them. New Amsterdam was one of the first to be settled in 1701. Shortly after New Amsterdam, Noorderstad was founded and proclaimed the colony's capital. Noorderstad was the prefect place for Agriculture due to its 2 rivers and valley. The colony prospered and was soon one of the Netherlands' largest colonies and produced the most for the mother nation. In 1776 the United States broke from Britain and that inspired the inhabitants of New Orange to start a revolution and become their own nation. In 1780 New Orange broke from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and became Dutch Columbia. New Amsterdam prospered after the revolution and became one of the largest cities in North America, factories and a state-of-the-art port were built and the city became an industrial mecca during the 1800's. Noorderstad and other cities were growing at a slower pace but eventually sped up due to the influx of Asian immigrants which were welcomed in Dutch Columbia. In 1858 Dutch Columbia became Pacific Columbia due to the nation's love of the Pacific Ocean and where its geographical location.

Late 1800's-Mid 1900's

Pacific Columbia continued to prosper into the early 1900's. New Amsterdam built the first skyscraper on the west coast and its port continued to grow at a steady rate due to the trade to Asia and Oceanic areas. Noorderstad and Raakingen continued to grow at a steady rate and started to look more like cities than towns. In 1927 Pacific Columbian Airways was founded as New Amsterdam Air Lines with its first flight from Noorderstad to New Amsterdam then on to Seattle using a Ford Trimotor. Pacific Columbia was not a major player in World War I but backed its ally, the United States and the Allied Powers. Rail was becoming very popular due to the close proximity to all of the cities and towns and it was expensive to get a car in Pacific Columbia due to the shipping costs from the mainland. Tram systems were built in New Amsterdam, Noorderstad and Raakingen. The Second World War broke out in 1939 when Germany attacked Europe including Pacific Columbia's mother nation The Netherlands. Pacific Columbia was involved in the Asia Theatre when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and Pacific Columbia's colony Fort Sebastian/Hong Tain. The war ended in 1945 after Japan surrendered after the atomic bombs were dropped and the Axis Powers fell. The first bridge across the Centraal Strait between the Noord and Zuid islands was planned in the 1930's as a suspension bridge and started construction in 1941, the bridge included 4 lanes of traffic and a double rail line on the lower deck, one of the first of its kind. The bridge would replace a 70 year ferry service between the 2 islands and would cut the travel time in half between New Amsterdam and Noorderstad. The nation's first tollway was built in 1946 connecting New Amsterdam and Noorderstad but rail was still the preferred method of transportation due to the travel time.

Late 1900's-Present

In the past decades Pacific Columbia has emerged as a major player in aircraft manufacturing and bio-tech. The nation is also one of the "greenest" nations in the world having strict environmental laws and having 20% of its power coming from "clean" energy sources. New Amsterdam continued to be a major player in the nation's economy and hitting 8 million people in it's metro area becoming the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. Pacific Columbian Airways has become one of the largest airlines in the world connecting Pacific Columbia to the world. Noorderstad is the most expensive city in North America and possibly one of the top in the world, the city has also become a fashion mecca passing New York as the top fashion destination in North America. High Speed Rail has become the preferred method of transportation but there are plentiful motorways in Pacific Columbia. The Centraal Strait is now spanned by 3 bridges and there is a 4th planned. Pacific Columbia is a Full Member of the Sim City Journal Union. Pacific Columbia has emerged as a world player and it will continue to be that way.

Geography and climate

Pacific Columbia is a very diverse geographical area, consisting of plains, mountains, plentiful rivers and inlets. The nation is made up of three islands which are all very diverse and world renowned for their natural beauty.

North (Noord) Island

North Island is home to the Columbian Mountain range and the Noord Lake. The island is dominated by Mt. IJs which translates into Mt. Ice in English. Mt. IJs is a dormant volcano and is the tallest mountain in Pacific Columbia. The volcano had its last eruption in 1690 and has recently been active with earthquakes detected deep beneath the mountain. The Noord Lake is the largest inland lake in Pacific Columbia, Noorderstad sits on this lake also the lake provides water for the city. The North Island is separated from the South Island by the Centraal Strait which is very popular for cruises because of its amazing natural beauty.

South (Zuid) Island

South Island is the most mountainous of the 3 Pacific Columbian Islands but also the most populated. The island is home to the southern part of the Columbian Range and the Zeehavik River which is the second largest river in the nation. The Zeehavik River empties into the Pacific Ocean just south of New Amsterdam near Zeehavikdam. The Zeehavik Estuary is a very large and diverse ecosystem with thousands of plant and animal species. The Zeehavik Valley is filled with temperate rainforests and gets the most rain on all of the islands. The south shore of the island is filled with inlets surrounded by mountains, this area is called one of the most beautiful areas in the nation and tour boats are very common here. The eastern shore of the island is dotted with coastal villages with small ports. This area is often called the "Dutch Harbor of Pacific Columbia" because of the plentiful fishing trawlers which leave every year to bring in a hefty profit, the fisherman here account for about 2/3 of the nation's fish.

Queen Wilhelmina Island

Queen Wilhelmina island is the smallest of the three Pacific Columbian islands. The island is famous for its temperate rainforests on its western shore. "QWI" as it is often called is relatively flat which makes for good farming land. The largest city on Queen Wilhelmina island is Raakingen with a population of about 750,000. The island may be the smallest but it may be one of the most ecologically diverse, with inlets, estuaries and small mountains QWI has all of the features of the much larger islands in a much smaller space which actually makes it more popular than the North and South Islands. Hiking is prime here and almost every town has at least 4 mountain stores.

Art Districts

New Amsterdam, Noorderstad and many other cities in Pacific Columbia have thriving art districts. These districts are very hip and are often revitalizing abandoned areas in the city they are in. The Warehouse District in New Amsterdam is the major Art District in New Amsterdam, this area is very popular with young people. The Canal District in Noorderstad is the major Art District in the capital. Most of these areas give tax breaks to developers who turn older worn out buildings into Lofts and shops.

Preforming Arts

Symphony

The New Amsterdam Symphony was founded in 1925 and is one of the largest in the world and holds concerts in the New Amsterdam Lyric Theatre and will be moving to the brand new Williams Preforming Arts Center in 2010 when it is completed. The current lead conductor and music director of the New Amsterdam Symphony is Anthony Huber.

The Noorderstad Symphony though not as world renowned is probably more popular within Pacific Columbia due to its smaller more down to earth shows. The symphony was founded in 195 and its lead director is Ervin Martin.

Other cities in Pacific Columbia have less famous symphonies, these cities include Raakingen and Zuidhaven. These symphonies are popular among the residents of these cities and were mostly founded due to the distance from New Amsterdam or Noorderstad.

Opera

Lyric Opera of New Amsterdam, founded in 1970, offers one American contemporary opera production during its annual season consisting of either four or five productions. The Lyric Opera also is located at the Lyric Theatre, and also will move to the Williams Performing Arts Center in 2010.

Noorderstad does not sport an official opera for the city but opera is becoming more and more popular within the city and there are plans to form a Lyric Opera of Noorderstad.

Pacific Columbia has been in the music scene since its founding. Many concerts are held in New Amsterdam for a variety of bands. There are many small clubs in all cities in Pacific Columbia that host bands almost every night.
