Confederation
The United Cascadian States operates as a confederation, with a limited, but necessary federal government; with the majority of sovereign rights and powers being retained by the states and the People. In Cascadia, the People are considered the Sovereign(s) of the state; Cascadia is essentially a United Kingdom that has been flipped upside-down, with the People as the Crown, and the government as the commoners; Cascadian political culture specifies the government as Servants of the People, whereas Cascadian law allows for the recall of many government officials by the People.

[Cascadian] government is established "with the consent of the governed...to protect the rights of individuals". In Cascadia, civil liberties and rights are of the utmost importance, and anyone or anything that attempts to restrict these are, for the most part, met with staunch resistance; the national value of Cascadia is Libertarianism, while most Cascadians identify as anti-Federalists where the federal government is concerned. In Cascadia, as well as the United States, anti-Federalism is the belief/ideology that the federal government only has powers that have been expressly devolved to it by the states or the People via the federal constitution. Cascadian anti-Federalists agree that a federal government is necessary, but believe that the majority of sovereign rights and powers rest with the states and the People.

Lovechild of Canada and America
Cascadia has been given the nickname of "Lovechild of Canada and America" due to its mixture of American and Canadian values.

Cascadians, like Canadians, are very welcoming and accepting; they also have the ability to laugh at themselves. Indeed, most Cascadians are able to see things from the other side of the looking glass, even if they don't necessarily agree with the other side's view.

However, unlike Canadians --and very much like Americans--, Cascadians believe in republicanism, that is, the form of governance called a "Republic". Cascadians are also similar to Americans in that the majority of both countries are staunch supporters of the Right to Bear Arms. The common view of those Cascadians and Americans is that a populace that is armed is one that is less susceptible to being oppressed by a tyrannical government. One of Cascadia's most revered Americans is the Third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson said on the matter:

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes ... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
