Geography and Climate

The island of Armalis is approximately 7500 square kilometers. Most of the island is mountainous, with the most arable land in the valleys. The largest population lives in the Armalbae Region, around Armalis Bay. In this region are the cities of Armalnaugh and Fort Geonova and their suburbs, as well as several small towns and villages: Cassam, Puoli, Alryn, and so on. This is the most fertile area of Armalis. Other metropolitan areas include Fios and Demetros-Okkeannaugh.

The climate of Armalis is generally dry throughout the summer months and wetter in the winter--an exception to this is the southern slope of the Armalbae Hills, which is much lusher. The average year round temperature is 58 degrees F.

History

The first settlers of Armalis were the Phoenicians, who founded a trading colony along the Armalbae coasts. This colony, built in the spot where the Oleannaugh of Armalnaugh currently sits, eventually turned into a major crossroads in the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians on Armalis eventually began to form their own culture different from those on the mainland. By the time the first Greeks arrived on the island (about 2500 BCE), the Armaleans formed their own unique culture.

Although the first Greeks to arrive on the island were probably fishermen, popular legend states that a Greek army, returning from the Trojan War, were blown off course and forced to settle on the north shore of the island. In either case, the Greeks established a small city-state, Demetros, on the hilly northeast of the island. These two cultures met in 742 BC, with the Greeks overrunning the Armaleans. The native Armalean culture was sent to the northwest, where they founded the city of Fios.

The Roman Empire took over from the Greeks, and the Byzantines took Armalis after the division of the Empire. The population grew exponentially to about 100,000 people. Armalis was overrun by the Ottomans, who controlled the island until the Empire dissolved in the early 20th Century, when the island fell under Turkish control.

In World War 2, the island fell to German control as a base in the Medeterranean.

Effects of Occupation

Current Politcal Climate

Currently, the Liberal-run govnerment is pro-America, pro-Capitalist. However, tension has been mounting in recent years. Many Native Armaleans are unhappy with the government, seeing it as just another form of occupation. Some political analysts fear that this will escalate into a civil war.
