Geography and Climate
Geographical Regions
To view the map of Anjay's geographical regions, click here.
For our convenience, we've divided Anjay into geographical regions for this section. Most of Anjay is forested, save for developed areas and farms.
- Starting in the north, the Northern Plains do what it says on the tin, and have few inhabitants. Temperatures remain mild to cool for most of the year, and winters are cold and snowy.
- The Western Mountains are very rugged, and sparsely populated. Climates range from similar to the Northern Plains in the north to more temperate weather in the south.
- The name of the River Delta/Gulf Coast region is partially misleading. Though the lowlands are indeed located on the coast of the Gulf of Newman, the river delta that Greater Newman and region now stand on is nonexistant because it has been drained by the extremely long Sanders Dam. The entire region is fairly well populated, with a major connector highway running the length of the region. Temperatures around Newman tend to be quite mild, with very warm summers. Further south along the coast, things are more temperate.
- The Great River Valley is worthy of its name. The valley itself is a breathtaking sight, with steep hills on either side for almost its entire length. Everything else is quite rugged, though not to the extent of the Western Mountains. It's more populated than the West, but not quite as much as other areas. The region's climate is temperate throughout.
- The Central/Southeast Hills are defined by their rolling hills. The southern portion of this region is among the nation's most densely populated non-urban areas, and fetches fairly warm temperatures. Further north, the cliamte turns temperate, and fewer settlements can be seen. The northern portion of this region is also notable for its vast metal deposits, especially around the city of Blue Coast.
- The Central Wells Seacoast consists mainly of flat to mildly hilly coastal lowlands, which are fairly consistently populated. The region hosts a temperate climate.
- A very mountainous area, the Stephen Mountains contain some of Anjay's highest points. Not many people live in the mountains, and temperatures are fairly cool.
- Cape Wells consists of rugged seacoast and a hilly interior. Mountains run along the centre of the large peninsula. The coast is dotted with communities, but it is less populated the further inland you go. This region is accompanied with a temperate climate.
- Finally, The Island of Conter lies fairly low, with some rolling hills. It's also quite well-populated. The Island hosts warm temperatures. Maney Beach is one of Anjay's most popular tourist destinations.
Off-Planet Territories
Anjay's only off-planet holding is the nearby planet of Malkane, which functions with more soverignity than the 3 provinces on Teringo.
Lately, the Anjanian government has been looking for a territory on Earth. The most likely candidate at the moment is a portion of Langlade Island, which the government would lease from France.
Government
System of Government
Anjay is what you'd probably call a Parliamentary Republic. It is based mainly on the governments of Canada and the UK, only without a monarch. See below:
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9614/governmentanjayoutbound3bt.png
The public votes directly on the Chancellor, while the Prime Minister is always the leader of the political party with the most seats in the House of Commons. The Prime Minister then chooses a cabinet to oversee the various departments of civil services. Together, the Chancellor, Prime Minister, and Cabinet make up the Executive Branch of governement. The Executive Branch has the power to appoint Senators and Supreme Court judges.
Any bills being proposed must be passed by both the Senate and the House of Commons, and then must be approved by the Executive Branch.
The Juicial Branch of Government is seperate from Parliament. Supreme Court Judges are appointed by the Executive Branch and serve either until death or until they are unable to work. They cannot be fired, except in extrordinary curcumstances.
The Current Parliamentary Session
Information regarding the current session of Anjanian Parliament is pending.
Political Parties
Administrative Divisions
Anjay is divided into 3 administrative divisions, or provinces. East Anjay encompasses the eastern half of the main continent. Likewise, the western half of the continent comprises West Anjay. The Island of Conter is its own administrative division.
Military
The military plays an extremely small role in the country. Only about 50,000 citizens are involved in the Anjanian Armed Forces (AAF), and of those, 45,000 are reserve solders who work at alternative day jobs. Only 5,000 are employed full-time. In spite of this, Anjay's military is still extremely advanced, with top-of-the-line hardware and very innovative military engineers.
Anjay's last military involvement was in the Myon-Granar War of February 2006, when 7500 personnel were sent to help defend The Republic of Myon's borders. The total number of Anjanian casualties was reported as 512.
Economy
Economic System
Anjay is largely a capitalist nation, but has a surprisingly legitimate set of corporations. This can be attributed to a competitive environment where there are, with a few exceptions, at least two large enterprises in each industry (A1 and Anjet come to mind); as well as to a vigilant public who are quick to boycott any dishonest company. Things like national railroads, ferries, and utilities are run as government mandated corporations, which are required by law to provide a specific service to the public.
Industries
Prominent Companies
- A1 Airlines - Anjay's second-largest passenger air carrier and chief competitor of AnJet.
- Anjanian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) - Anjay's largest broadcaster and news company, they are under a government mandate to document and broadcast current events and issues. ABC is in charge of several television channels and radio frequencies.
- AnJet - Anjay's largest commercial airline.
- AnTrak - A government mandated corporation, it's Anjay's only passenger rail carrier.
- Geotech - Anjay's most prominent mining company. The majority of its operations are around the city of Blue Coast.
- HyperCraft Aerospace - Anjay's leading aerospace company, and the country's largest manufacturer of spacecraft.
- ND Financial Group - A major Anjanian bank. Better known as ND Anjay Trust, the name of their personal and commercial banking branches, they're also involved in brokerage, insursance, and other financial services.
- Teringo News Network (TNN) - A large, independent Anjanian news broadcaster. In addition to television, TNN also publishes Anjay's largest national newspaper, the Planetary Chronicle.
- Teringo Sports Holdings Incorporated - Owns most of Anjay's professional sports teams, as well as a few large arenas.
Demographics
Transportation
Land
For a detailed map showing Anjay's major highways, click here (2000x1545, 309 kb).
Anjay has an extensive network of divided highways, known as the National Freeway System. The network connects every major city, allowing for speedy travel around the country. Connector highways connect with communities not adjacent to Freeways, and local highways provide another tier of connectivity.
On the Anjanian continent, National Freeways are numbered by 10s (10, 20, 30, etc), but on the Island of Conter, a different approach is used. On the southwest corner of the Island, the cross-island highway (Freeway 1) begins. It passes through the provincial capital and then forks in the city of Denfield. The eastern fork becomes Freeway 1A and follows the inner coast around the Island. Likewise, the western fork becomes Freeway 1B which follows the Island's outer coast. The two freeways meet again just outside of Cravach, on the opposite end of the U-shaped Island. The cities of Maney Beach and Taven are connected by Freeway 2, the only other National Freeway on the Island.
Anjay also has a well-developed rail network. Passenger service is provided by AnTrak, which connects to several major cities. Passenger Routes terminate in St. Joseph, Nova, Cravach, Cape Wells, Newman, Port West, Deltaville, Fort Fairweather, and Lansing.
Water
Anjay has a vast system of navigable rivers and canals. A freighter can travel from Deltaville to Lansing without ever touching salt water. Year-round ferry service is provided between the cities of Cape Wells, Port Kent, and Coastburg.
Air
Air travel isn't as prominent here as it is on Earth, due to Teringo's relatively small size. Still, it exists. The majority of commercial flights are performed by AnJet and A1 Airlines, but a few other companies compete for passengers as well.
Space
Space travel too is rather low-key, though that is set to change soon. Prior to contact with other nations, people only needed to travel from Teringo to the nearby colony of Malkane, so currently, Anjay only has two small spaceports in Newman and Nova. However, a new, larger spaceport is being planned for the Beckett Valley Region to accomidate space traffic to and from Earth and other planets. Intersun has announced it's intentions to offer service to Teringo, which means that regular interstellar routes aren't long off.
Culture
Sport
Ice Hockey is very popular in Anjay, which has two teams in the Simtropolis Hockey League (STHL): The St. Joseph Sea Dogs and the Blue Coast Bombers, both of which did fairly well last season in the extremely powerful South Conference. Both teams are set to start season 2 very soon.
Other popular sports include soccer, tennis, rowing, and swimming.
Wharfcliffe Academy, a private school located in St. Joseph, was briefly involved in the now-nonexistent Simtropolis High School Conference. While participating in the Basketball championships, they managed to edge out Cézarest's Jefferson High School in overtime to clinch third place.
